In Kenya, a lion cub fell down a steep cliff, but fortunately his mother was there to save him.  And fortunately for us, a photographer captured the whole touching scene on camera.  Aaaaand I’m instantly in a better mood.

My style varies from day-to-day, and since I was feeling casual I decided to dress in my Tretorn Nylites with jeans, a graphic tee and a sports jacket.
I definitely like to match, so pink and white was the common theme in my outfit.
I’m in love with the fact that these shoes are made from natural canvas and Eco OrthoLite® insole just makes me feel like I’m walking on air.
Go get a pair at store.tretorn.com for $55 USD and you’ll fall in love with your own Tretorn Nylites just as much as I did.

MAKE-UP REVIEW - The Body Shop Extra Virgin Minerals Collection

By Giselle San Miguel

Available from September 19, 2011 in-store or visit their web site online at thebodyshop.ca

Extra Virgin Minerals™ Cream Compact Foundation ($25)

The Body Shop’s Extra Virgin Minerals Loose Powder Foundation gave me a natural-looking complexion. The application is easy considering all you need is a brush to apply a smooth finish. Considering how most powders feel heavy and caked on, this one felt natural and it did last quite long.

RATING 4/5

Extra Virgin Minerals ™ Loose Powder Foundation ($25)

Considering I have quite oily skin, and this was moisturizing foundation, it did not suit well for my skin. Maybe if I used it for the winter and not for the summer months it would feel a lot better. I did love how the brush blended on like a cream and didn’t feel quite heavy like most creamy foundations. The smell did put me off quite a bit considering it literally has “100% Community Fair Trade Italian cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil.”

BOOK REVIEW: The Predicteds by Christine Seifert

The Predicteds by Christine Seifert

By Giselle San Miguel
On sale wherever books are sold
Paperback copy

DESCRIPTION

“Your future is not your own…”

We wanted to know what makes a good kid good and a bad kid bad. Can you blame us for that? We found an astoundingly, marvelously simple answer: The brain isn’t so much a complicated machine as it is a crystal ball. If you look into it, you will see everything you want to know. -Dr. Mark Miliken, senior researcher at Utopia Laboratories Who will it be? Will the head cheerleader get pregnant? Is the student council president a secret drug addict?

The whole school is freaking out about PROFILE, an experimental program that can predict students’ future behavior. The only question Daphne wants answered is whether Jesse will ask her out…but he’s a Predicted, and there’s something about his future he’s not telling her.

THE REVIEW

I don’t know if your high school was like this but mine either was, and I didn’t pay attention or it WASN’T because I went to a Catholic school. I find all these high school cliques very condescending just because someone looks a certain way. i.e, a quiet girl who wears a lot of eyeliner, chokers, studs and listens to metal rock would be classified as a goth. Or the head cheerleader who wears the latest clothes and has the best car, boyfriend, house, etc. is deemed as the snobby queen bee of the school. We place prejudices against people just because they look a certain way. I find that wrong. But anyway..back to the book..

What I love about Daphne’s character is that she doesn’t care. She befriends the goth girl AND the snobby rich girl. She doesn’t care what other people think and that to me is admirable.

Quiet High is in an uproar about PROFILE, an experimental program that can predict what a student will do in the future. Kind of reminds me of that Tom Cruise movie Minority Report where the psychics predict who would commit a crime. In Predicteds, it’s about a student’s crime. Students whisper about other students and their families, basically stereotyping anyone who looks like they could committ a crime.

I have this knack for figuring out who the bad guy is and I was right. Not surprising but Christine really did entertain me and kept me turning those pages to find out who was doing setting up who. I enjoyed it and if you like mysteries just as much as me, I’m sure you’ll gobble this novel right up.

RATING 4/5

QUOTES

I love the little quotes about the Predicteds story at the start of every chapter. It got my excitement up through the entire novel.

“Romance, Daphne, happens because of a little something called chemistry —when two people are drawn together for reasons that nobody can explain. It’s like putting magnets together. Nobody knows why. One of life’s great mysteries.”—Dizzy (page 107)

“It drives me nuts that I don’t have a cellphone. Recently, I saw someone on TV say that the pope has an iPhone. I’m truly behind the times.” —Daphne (page 170)

BOOK REVIEW: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Divergent by Veronica Roth

By Giselle San Miguel
On sale wherever books are sold
Hard Cover Copy

DESCRIPTION

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves … or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

THE REVIEW

The book starts off with Beatrice Prior, an Abgenation who as we know it is in the selfless faction. The abgenation faction is selflessness, erudite is knowledge, dauntless is courage, amity is peace.

At 16, all citizens take a test that will help them determine which faction they are most suited to. She takes the test and her result is that she is Divergent, a combination of all factions. Her final decision faction though is Dauntless. To be accepted as a Dauntless member Beatrice must rank high into each of her trial missions.

I won’t go into detail of each mission because my reviews are spoiler free but I will say the action and plot starts around the 400+ page. I enjoyed reading about the missions very much but I wished the plot started sooner because I wanted to know what the government was up to. And at the very end, I was left with such a cliffhanger that I’m sure I’ll be first in line to buy the second novel. Hopefully, all my questions will be answered. Not to mention that having a love story woven into the plot also acts as a key driver for drama :)
